What to watch in the US session

The US session (New York open · the afternoon drive) · updated 2026-09-01 12:02 UTC.

Geopolitics is still writing the tape. Tanker-strike headlines out of Hormuz have oil bid, equities sliding, and the 10-year yield above the level that made bond traders sit up. The continuity is intact: risk is still headline-driven, and the dollar remains the steady hand. Oil trades at 86.74, up 1.1% on the 8-hour tape and still holding above the 84.86 support that flipped from resistance.

The session window flips from euro-area CPI to domestic data. The main event is the ISM Manufacturing PMI (high impact), with ISM prices, JOLTS job openings, construction spending, the final manufacturing PMI, and FOMC's Barr speaking. API's weekly bulletin caps the evening. A heavy calendar — expect the dollar to take its cue from the numbers rather than the news.

The barometer still leans dollar-positive. USD/JPY is the clean bull: 160.13, no ceiling above, but 3.4 ATR from the 159.75 floor — chasing now is like boarding the last train car: it works until it doesn't. Gold sits at 4373, bearish-leaning with H4 RSI 27.2, so an oversold bounce is possible, but 4360.82 is the line. Cable stays squeezed between 1.35271 and 1.35391; EUR/USD idles low at 1.15917. If ISM surprises, that range breaks; if not, expect more of the same.
