Crypto Soared on a Senate Bill the Street Prices at Just 14% — Now What?

FX, gold and oil are closed — crypto trades on. Session preps resume Sunday 21:00 UTC. Updated 2026-08-30 12:55 UTC.

The Week That Was

It was a week of whiplash, and if you blinked, you missed a few chapters. Global markets opened on the back foot after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran — oil surged, airlines sank, and bonds defied the safe-haven playbook, per CNBC. By Friday, the narrative had shifted: AI isn't eating software after all, and one headline called the sector's "epic" rally capable of running through October. Gold had its own drama — early momentum from dollar weakness and fiscal worries reversed, with prices falling to $4,445/oz as Kitco's Main Street crowd pared its bullish majority with payrolls now in focus. The PCE hype? FOREX.com notes it "now rarely matches market moves" — CPI, they say, remains the more reliable volatility event. And crypto? More below — it was arguably the week's biggest story.

What The Charts Are Saying

Let's start with our technical barometer — the structural read across daily, 4-hour, and 1-hour timeframes.

- EUR/USD — neutral (46/100). D1 is up, but H4 and H1 are mixed-to-down, with H4 RSI at 23.8 and H1 at 22.6 — deeply stretched. Support 1.15470, resistance 1.15835. Evenly balanced.

- GBP/USD — bearish leaning (33/100). The clearest short-term lean of the majors. H4 and H1 both point down, RSI in the high-20s/low-20s. Cable is testing toward support at 1.35008 with resistance overhead at 1.35867. Structure intact, momentum down.

- USD/JPY — bullish leaning (68/100). H4 and H1 both up, RSI near 71 — overbought and stretched. Support 159.41724, resistance 163.74800, a full 28.5 ATRs above. Room to run, but the tape is warm.

- Gold — neutral (54/100). D1 is still up, but H4 and H1 are mixed, and the H4 RSI at 27.9 tells you sellers had the week. Support 4401.50, resistance 4616.48. Kitco's Wall Street analysts still hold out hope, and the "40 trillion reasons" bullish camp hasn't budged.

- Oil — neutral (57/100). Price is squeezed between 82.48 and 83.12 — barely half an ATR of room. The chart itself says a breakout is on the table; direction unknown.

- Bitcoin & Ethereum — neutral tilt (58/100), but bullish leaning. D1 is up for both, H1 is up, H4 is down — a pause within an uptrend. More in Crypto Corner.

The honest read: cable leans bearish, USD/JPY leans bullish, and everything else is digesting. Nothing here screams "all clear" — it screams "pick your levels and respect them."

Crypto Corner

The CLARITY Act lit a fire under the market. The Senate moved closer to a key vote — September 15, with traders giving it just a 14% chance, per CryptoTicker — and Bitcoin and Ethereum soared on the news, per CoinMarketCap. Ethereum was the star: up 29.6% in seven days, beating Bitcoin by 6.9 percentage points (TechStock²), with Bitcoin holding above $77,000 after nearing $80K earlier in the week. ETF flows were spectacular — $23 billion last week, though Decrypt notes only $2.6 billion was new money; the rest was coins investors already owned.

Our barometer reads both BTC and ETH as bullish-leaning but neutral overall — with ranges so tight it's almost funny. Bitcoin's support sits at 78,043.9 and resistance at 78,243.8 — a window of just 200 points. Daily Forex calls it "the tightest volatility squeeze on record," with a familiar RSI pattern from 2022 converging. Range trades like this tend to end in a volatility burst.

Around the edges: Sberbank says it will accept BTC as collateral, Russia blacklisted 2,600 crypto wallets (while reportedly using crypto to dodge its own sanctions), the BIS warned of "digital dollarization" and what it could mean for USDT and USDC, and the SEC sent crypto custody reforms to the White House for review. And analysts at CoinDesk strike a cautious note — more downside could lie ahead even as prices steady. The range, in other words, runs both ways.

What The Street Is Watching

Jackson Hole is on everyone's lips. CNBC reports dollar and bond markets are "on edge" as Bessent's market intervention piles pressure on Warsh. FOREX.com adds the Dollar Index rebounded off downtrend support last week and is now approaching major resistance ahead of the symposium. Meanwhile, StoneX flags the Nasdaq consolidating just below record highs in a possible symmetrical triangle, with investors rotating out of tech and AI — a rotation Moomoo expects to be tested next week with Broadcom, Snowflake, and Palo Alto earnings, plus Tesla's "Cybercab" unveiling event.

The Week Ahead

A genuinely busy one. Tuesday brings the first major test: Eurozone flash CPI, the high-impact ISM Manufacturing PMI, and JOLTS job openings. Wednesday is the heavyweight — Australian GDP, the RBNZ rate decision with statement and press conference, ADP payrolls, and the Bank of Canada's rate statement. Monday offers German preliminary CPI. And Kiplinger reminds us this week's calendar includes several labor market updates, including the August jobs report — Moomoo calls it a key test for whether the "hardware to software" rotation has legs.

What To Watch

- Gold at a crossroads: support 4401.50, resistance 4616.48. Moneycontrol expects a cautious, possibly gap-down start on Monday.

- Oil's coiled spring: 82.48 to 83.12 — the tighter the squeeze, the louder the breakout.

- USD/JPY's bullish lean: intact, but RSI near 71 is stretched.

- Cable's bearish momentum: watch 1.35008 for a real test.

- BTC/ETH's historic squeeze: ranges this tight don't last — and with the CLARITY vote set for September 15, the headlines won't stay quiet either.

A last note: markets are giving us a lot to chew on, but the best traders stay curious and keep their risk small. Whatever next week brings, you've got the tools to read it — take it one candle at a time.
