Retirees: This investment gives you a guaranteed 5% safe withdrawal rate
Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) are bonds whose principal adjusts with inflation, paying a fixed "real" yield on top of that adjustment. With yields now at or near their highest levels in two decades, TIPS are offering a genuine inflation-adjusted return for the first time in a generation.
This matters for retirees because of the "safe withdrawal rate" concept. A long-standing guideline held that withdrawing roughly 4% of a portfolio annually kept it sustainable over 30 years. When TIPS real yields approach 5%, a retiree can potentially fund that level of inflation-adjusted income from the bond alone — without touching principal, and with the U.S. Treasury's credit backing.
What to watch: real yields are fluid. They will respond to the Federal Reserve's policy path and inflation expectations. If they hold at these levels, TIPS become a more durable building block for retirement income. If they fall, the window narrows. As always, yield is not total return, and duration risk applies to anyone selling before maturity.
