Second straight rate hike for Asia’s number-three economy as Nvidia-led AI expansion continues
The Bank of Korea tightened monetary policy again Thursday, raising its benchmark rate by 25 basis points to 3% — a second straight hike that came alongside an upward revision to the country's growth forecasts. The combination of tighter policy and a brighter economic outlook signals the central bank sees enough momentum in the export-driven economy to look past the drag that higher borrowing costs typically create.
South Korea, Asia's third-largest economy, sits at the center of the global artificial-intelligence supply chain as a leading producer of the advanced memory chips that power AI systems. Nvidia's second-quarter results, which revealed sustained demand for AI infrastructure, serve as a powerful confirmation that the export boom underpinning Korea's growth is unlikely to fade quickly. That demand outlook is helping the Bank of Korea justify both higher rates and higher projections at the same time.
The key question for markets is whether inflation stays well-behaved as growth picks up. If price pressures remain contained, further policy normalization becomes easier to sustain. If the AI-driven export bonanza cools or inflation resurfaces, the central bank's current confidence could quickly require recalibration.
