Why investors need to learn the difference between uncertainty and risk in today’s market

The distinction between uncertainty and risk is more than semantic. Risk typically refers to situations where outcomes can be estimated with probabilities; uncertainty describes conditions where those probabilities are unknown or shifting. In today's market, where rate paths, geopolitics and earnings expectations can change quickly, that gap matters for how portfolios are positioned.

Hedge-fund founder Alec Litowitz argues that investors should make their identity about being adaptive, rather than trying to be right. The implication is that a rigid commitment to a single forecast can be costly when the information environment changes faster than any thesis can be updated. Adaptability, by contrast, allows exposure to be adjusted as new data arrives.

For market participants, the practical takeaway is to watch how portfolios behave when conditions shift, not just how they perform in a base case. Questions worth asking include whether a strategy relies on one macro outcome, and whether it can respond if that outcome fails to materialise.
