Digital euro makes debut in wholesale financial markets - ft.com
The European Central Bank has taken its first step into wholesale financial markets with the digital euro, according to the Financial Times. Unlike a retail version aimed at everyday consumers, this wholesale phase focuses on transactions between financial institutions — settling interbank payments and securities trades using central bank money in digital form.
The distinction matters. Wholesale central bank digital currency is designed to improve efficiency in markets that move large sums between banks, where settlement speed and finality carry real weight. By testing the digital euro in this environment first, the ECB can explore the technology's benefits — such as faster settlement and reduced counterparty risk — without the broader disruptions a consumer-facing digital currency might bring to bank deposits.
For markets, the key question is whether wholesale CBDC can integrate with existing infrastructure without fragmenting liquidity. Watch for how the ECB's trials progress, whether commercial banks adopt the settlement rails, and how the project compares with similar wholesale experiments by other central banks. The retail debate remains separate and unresolved.
