ECB launches Pontes for tokenised wholesale settlement - The Paypers
medium impactEUR
The European Central Bank has launched Pontes, a new infrastructure for settling tokenised wholesale transactions. The initiative is designed to connect distributed ledger technology (DLT) platforms with central bank money, addressing a long-standing question in digital asset markets: how tokenised securities and other wholesale instruments can be settled with the same finality and safety as traditional transactions.
The development matters because tokenisation has largely advanced on private rails, with settlement often occurring in commercial bank money or stablecoins rather than central bank liabilities. By offering a central bank settlement layer for wholesale use, Pontes could reduce fragmentation across DLT platforms and give financial institutions a common anchor for tokenised bond, repo, and collateral operations.
What to watch is adoption rather than the launch itself. Market participants will monitor which platforms and institutions connect to Pontes, which asset classes are settled first, and whether the infrastructure expands beyond its initial scope. For now, the move signals that Europe's central bank is treating tokenised wholesale settlement as a practical plumbing question, not a distant experiment.
