Eurosystem brings central bank money to tokenised finance - Zprávy Kurzy.cz

The Eurosystem has taken a step toward connecting central bank money with tokenised financial markets. The initiative is significant because it addresses one of the key obstacles to broader adoption of tokenised assets: the lack of a settlement asset backed by a central bank. In tokenised finance, securities and other instruments are issued and traded on distributed ledger infrastructure, but transactions still need a reliable form of money to settle against.
By making central bank money available in this environment, the Eurosystem aims to reduce settlement risk and support the integration of distributed ledger technology with existing payment and securities systems. For markets, this could improve efficiency in areas such as collateral management and cross-border transactions, where tokenisation has long been seen as promising but difficult to implement at scale.
What to watch is how the framework develops in practice — which institutions gain access, which use cases are prioritised, and how the approach interacts with ongoing work on a digital euro. The direction is clear, but the operational details will determine how quickly tokenised finance moves from pilot projects toward mainstream use.
