Perp futures linked to 'bitcoin VIX' debut on Hyperliquid - CoinDesk

medium impactBitcoin

Hyperliquid has listed perpetual futures tied to a bitcoin volatility index — often described as a "bitcoin VIX" — giving traders a way to take directional views on expected price swings rather than price alone. The product references an index that tracks implied volatility in bitcoin options, the same concept the Cboe VIX applies to the S&P 500.

The listing matters because crypto has lacked a deep, easily accessible venue for trading volatility itself. Until now, expressing a view on whether bitcoin markets would calm down or turn choppy typically meant trading options directly, which brings strike selection, expiries and Greeks into the picture. A perpetual futures contract simplifies that exposure into a single instrument, though it also introduces funding costs and liquidation risk.

What to watch: how much liquidity and open interest the contract attracts, how closely it tracks the underlying index, and whether volatility becomes a standalone asset class in crypto or remains a niche tool for sophisticated desks.
