The European Central Bank and several EU national central banks have reportedly asked for changes to the MiCA framework's minimum bank deposit requirement for stablecoin issuers, according to TradingView. MiCA, the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation, sets reserve and custody rules for stablecoin issuers, including how much of their reserves must be held as deposits at credit institutions.
The request signals a supervisory debate over how stablecoin reserves should be structured rather than a confirmed rule change. Central banks have generally favored strong reserve backing and limited exposure to riskier assets, but the deposit requirement also affects issuer costs and the banking sector's role in the stablecoin ecosystem. Any adjustment could therefore influence how issuers manage reserves and where they hold them.
What to watch: whether the European Banking Authority or other regulators formally propose amendments, and how any revision is framed—as a technical calibration or a broader shift in reserve policy. Until then, the existing MiCA requirements remain in force, and market participants should treat the reported request as a policy signal rather than an enacted change.
