ECB seeks tighter MiCA rules to block indirect stablecoin yields and protect bank deposits - CoinDesk

The European Central Bank is pushing for stricter enforcement of the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, aiming to close loopholes that allow stablecoin holders to earn yield indirectly. Under current rules, issuing stablecoins that pay interest is prohibited, but the ECB is concerned that third-party platforms and reward schemes may be circumventing that ban. The central bank's stated motivation is protecting bank deposits, which could face outflows if stablecoins offered attractive returns.

For markets, the development signals that European regulators are focused less on stablecoins' existence than on their resemblance to bank deposits. If tighter guidance is adopted, platforms offering yield-like incentives on stablecoin balances inside the EU may need to restructure those products. That could reduce demand for some stablecoin-based services in Europe, while reinforcing the competitive position of regulated bank savings products.

What to watch: whether the ECB issues formal guidance or relies on national supervisors, and how MiCA's rules are applied to non-EU platforms serving European users. The pace of any change matters, as abrupt restrictions could affect stablecoin liquidity and trading activity across European venues.
