ECB Stablecoin Regulation Expands Yield Ban and Reserve Rules - The Cryptonomist

The European Central Bank is widening its regulatory framework for stablecoin issuers, extending restrictions on yield-bearing features and tightening reserve requirements. Under the expanded rules, stablecoin holders would not be offered interest or similar returns tied to holding the token — a measure aimed at preventing these instruments from functioning like bank deposits outside the existing supervisory perimeter. Reserve rules are also being sharpened, with closer scrutiny of the assets backing token issuance.
For markets, the development matters on two fronts. First, it signals that European authorities intend to treat stablecoin economics — not just issuance and custody — as a supervisory concern, which could reshape how issuers design products for EU users. Second, stricter reserve standards may raise compliance costs and favor larger, more transparent issuers over smaller ones.
What to watch: how these measures interact with the EU's existing crypto rulebook, whether issuers adjust offerings for European clients, and whether similar yield restrictions appear in other jurisdictions. The direction of travel is toward stablecoins as payment instruments rather than savings products.
