ECB wants stablecoin yield ban expanded across crypto lending and staking - Crypto News

The European Central Bank is pushing to widen its proposed ban on stablecoin yield, extending the restriction beyond simple holdings to cover crypto lending and staking products as well. The original proposal targeted stablecoin issuers that offered interest-like returns to holders; the expanded scope would also capture platforms that generate yield by lending out stablecoins or using them in staking arrangements.
The rationale is regulatory consistency. If stablecoins are treated as payment instruments rather than investments, the ECB argues that yield-bearing structures — however they are packaged — raise similar concerns about investor protection and financial stability. Leaving lending and staking outside the ban, in its view, would simply shift the activity to less visible corners of the market.
For market participants, the key question is how broadly "yield" would be defined and whether the rules would apply to offshore platforms serving EU users. The proposal remains subject to the EU legislative process, so its final scope is not yet settled. What to watch: the definitional language, the treatment of third-country providers, and how other jurisdictions respond to a stricter European stance.
