SoFi has begun using a stablecoin to settle transactions on Mastercard's network, according to Yahoo Finance, making it the first bank-issued stablecoin to go live on a major card network. Settlement refers to the final movement of funds between institutions, the back-end step that happens after a card is swiped. Traditionally, that process runs through conventional banking rails and can take hours or days.
The development matters because it tests whether blockchain-based settlement can work inside regulated banking and existing card infrastructure rather than alongside it. Stablecoins are designed to hold a steady value, typically pegged to a fiat currency, which makes them more suitable for payments than volatile crypto assets. Card networks gain faster, potentially round-the-clock settlement, while banks gain a regulated route into digital-asset payments.
What to watch: whether other banks and networks follow with similar arrangements, how regulators respond, and whether settlement speed or cost improvements show up in practice. Adoption at scale, not a single launch, would signal a real shift in payment infrastructure.
