Europe's Central Banks Want Stablecoin Reserves Out of Bank Deposits. Here Is Why. - fintechweekly.com

European central banks are reportedly pushing for stablecoin issuers to hold their reserve assets outside of traditional bank deposits. The concern centres on the structure of fiat-backed stablecoins, where reserves are often parked with commercial banks. If a large issuer faced sudden redemption pressure and had to withdraw those deposits quickly, the resulting outflow could strain the banks holding them — and, by extension, the wider financial system.
The debate reflects a broader question regulators have raised since stablecoins grew in scale: whether these tokens are simply a payments tool or a source of bank-like risk that sits outside the bank safety net. Moving reserves into instruments such as short-term government debt could reduce that channel of contagion, though it may also affect the yield issuers earn on reserves and, potentially, the economics of the tokens themselves.
For markets, the key thing to watch is how any such expectation is formalised — through binding rules or supervisory guidance — and whether it applies only to new reserves or forces existing holdings to be restructured. The timing and scope will matter more than the principle itself.
