EXCLUSIVE: Binance stablecoin licence bid about to be rejected by Bank of Greece before withdrawal - AML Intelligence

medium impactCrypto

Binance's reported withdrawal of its stablecoin licence application in Greece, coming just before the Bank of Greece was expected to reject it, highlights how closely European regulators are scrutinising stablecoin issuers under the new MiCA framework. According to AML Intelligence, the application was pulled before an anticipated negative decision, meaning the Greek regulator never issued a formal refusal.

For the market, the significance lies less in Greece specifically than in the broader supervisory posture. MiCA requires stablecoin issuers to hold e-money or credit institution authorisation, meet reserve and safeguarding standards, and satisfy fit-and-proper and anti-money-laundering checks. A withdrawal avoids a public rejection but does not resolve the underlying supervisory concerns, and other national competent authorities may weigh the same issues when reviewing future applications.

What to watch: whether Binance pursues authorisation in another EU jurisdiction, how the Bank of Greece characterises the case, and whether other exchanges face similar friction. For users and counterparties, the practical question is where a stablecoin is authorised and what protections that authorisation carries.
