Citibank’s Coinbase stablecoin payments let institutional clients skip crypto setup - The Cryptonomist

Citibank and Coinbase have introduced a stablecoin payment capability that allows the bank's institutional clients to move funds without building their own crypto infrastructure. According to The Cryptonomist, the arrangement lets clients access stablecoin-based settlement through Citibank rather than setting up wallets, custody, or blockchain connectivity themselves.
The significance lies in distribution. Stablecoins have grown as a tool for faster, round-the-clock settlement, but adoption among large institutions has often been slowed by operational and compliance requirements. By wrapping that access inside an existing banking relationship, the model lowers the technical barrier to entry and keeps the client-facing layer familiar.
What to watch is how broadly this model spreads. If more banks follow, stablecoins could become a routine settlement rail embedded in traditional accounts rather than a separate ecosystem. Key questions include which currencies and networks are supported, how reserves and redemption are handled, and how regulators treat bank-intermediated stablecoin flows. For now, the development signals continued convergence between conventional banking and blockchain-based payments.
