Stripe, Visa-Backed Consortium Launches Dollar Stablecoin - bloomberg.com

A consortium that includes payments companies Stripe and Visa has launched a dollar-denominated stablecoin, according to Bloomberg. The token is designed to maintain a one-to-one value with the U.S. dollar, a structure common to stablecoins that back reserves with cash or cash-equivalent assets.

The involvement of established payment firms is notable because stablecoins have traditionally been issued by crypto-native companies. Participation by players embedded in mainstream card and online payment networks suggests the technology is being evaluated as settlement infrastructure rather than purely as a crypto trading instrument. For markets, that distinction matters: stablecoins are already a major source of liquidity between traditional currencies and digital assets, and new issuance from well-known firms can influence how that liquidity is distributed.

What to watch includes the composition and custody of the reserves, the degree of regulatory oversight, and whether merchants or card networks begin accepting the token for real transactions. Those details will determine whether this is a meaningful shift in payments infrastructure or another entry in a crowded stablecoin field.
