Why bond investors quickly lost their enthusiasm for weak jobs figures

A surprisingly weak U.S. labor report briefly restored demand for U.S. Treasuries, reminding investors that government debt can still serve as a safe haven when economic data disappoints. The reaction was short-lived, however, as enthusiasm faded quickly once markets reassessed what softer employment figures might mean for inflation, Federal Reserve policy, and the path of interest rates.

For bond investors, the episode highlights a recurring tension. Weak jobs data can support bond prices by reinforcing expectations of slower growth or eventual rate cuts. But the same data can also raise questions about fiscal conditions, inflation persistence, or how long any safety bid will last. That ambiguity helps explain why the initial rally in Treasuries did not extend further.

What to watch now is how upcoming data and Fed commentary shape the rate outlook. If labor market softness persists, demand for safe-haven debt could return. If investors instead focus on inflation risks or heavy government borrowing, the safe-haven appeal of Treasuries may remain fleeting.
