The S&P 500 is back in record territory as the ‘Magnificent Seven’ ride to the rescue
The S&P 500 has returned to record territory, with the index's recovery driven in large part by renewed strength in the so-called "Magnificent Seven" group of mega-cap technology and growth stocks. These companies had spent much of the past year trading sideways, leaving the broader market without its most influential leaders. Their comeback has helped re-energize a bull market that had been pressured by two persistent headwinds: rising bond yields and crude-oil prices that have remained stubbornly high.
The development matters because index performance is heavily concentrated in these names. When the largest constituents stall, the S&P 500 can struggle to make progress even if conditions elsewhere are stable. When they rally, they can lift the index almost single-handedly, which is what appears to have happened here.
What to watch from here is whether the advance broadens beyond these leaders. A durable record run typically needs participation from a wider set of sectors. Investors may also monitor whether bond yields and oil prices ease, since both have the potential to test the market's momentum if they continue climbing.
