ESMA gives EU crypto platforms 3 months to drop non-MiCA stablecoins such as USDT - CoinDesk

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has set a three-month deadline for crypto platforms operating in the EU to delist stablecoins that do not comply with the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, according to CoinDesk. The move directly affects widely used tokens such as USDT, which have not yet secured authorization under the new framework.

MiCA introduced a unified licensing regime for crypto assets across the bloc, with stablecoin issuers required to meet reserve, disclosure, and governance standards. ESMA's deadline signals that the transition period is ending and that enforcement, rather than guidance, is now the operative stance. For platforms, that means a choice between removing non-compliant tokens or facing regulatory consequences.

The development matters beyond Europe. USDT is a dominant source of trading liquidity, so its withdrawal from EU venues could fragment order books, shift volume toward MiCA-compliant alternatives, and widen spreads on affected pairs. Market participants will be watching whether issuers pursue authorization, how platforms sequence delistings, and whether liquidity migrates smoothly or creates short-term dislocations in EU crypto markets.
