ESMA’s stablecoin regulation urges firms to halt services for non-compliant tokens - The Cryptonomist

medium impactCrypto

The European Securities and Markets Authority has urged regulated firms to stop offering services tied to stablecoins that do not meet the requirements of the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets framework. The guidance signals that supervisors expect compliance decisions to be made now, rather than deferred until transitional arrangements lapse.

For market participants, the practical effect is a clearer dividing line between tokens that can be distributed and traded within the EU and those that cannot. Stablecoins sit at the centre of crypto trading and payments activity, so any narrowing of the eligible universe can affect liquidity, listing decisions and the range of products firms are able to offer European clients.

What to watch is how individual national regulators translate the guidance into deadlines, and whether issuers respond by adjusting reserves, disclosure or authorisation status. Also relevant is whether liquidity migrates toward compliant tokens or fragments across venues. The direction of travel is toward a more formally supervised stablecoin market in Europe, with compliance status becoming a competitive factor rather than a background detail.
