Bakkt taps Thredd for stablecoin credit card service - The Paypers
Bakkt has selected Thredd, a payments processing platform, to support a stablecoin-linked credit card service, according to The Paypers. The arrangement places a regulated digital asset firm and an established card processor on the same rails, signaling another step in the convergence of stablecoins and mainstream consumer payments.
For markets, the development matters less as a standalone product launch and more as a signal about infrastructure. Stablecoin usage has largely been confined to trading, remittances, and treasury movements. Tying stablecoins to card networks could broaden their role in everyday spending, but it also raises questions about settlement mechanics, reserve backing, and how issuers manage conversion between tokens and fiat at the point of sale.
What to watch: whether the service moves beyond announcement into live issuance, which card networks and issuers participate, and how regulators treat stablecoin-funded credit. Adoption will depend on whether the economics work for merchants and cardholders, not just on the technology being available.
