Chip bellwether ASML says customers are already asking to place orders — for 2030

ASML, the Dutch supplier of lithography equipment that sits at the base of the semiconductor supply chain, said customers are already expressing interest in placing orders for delivery in 2029 and 2030. The company described that interest as strong.

The detail matters because ASML's order book is widely treated as a forward-looking gauge of chipmakers' capital spending plans. Its machines are among the most expensive and longest-lead items in fab construction, so commitments made years ahead tend to reflect confidence in future demand rather than near-term conditions. Interest, however, is not the same as a signed order, and the company did not disclose volumes or values.

For observers of the chip cycle, the signal to watch is how that expressed interest converts into firm bookings and whether it spans logic and memory customers alike. Longer-dated visibility can support planning across the equipment ecosystem, but it does not by itself settle questions about the pace of AI-related spending or the timing of any broader semiconductor recovery.
