Qivalis secures Dutch EMI license to launch bank-backed euro stablecoin - CoinDesk

medium impactEURCrypto

Qivalis has obtained an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license from Dutch regulators, clearing the way for the firm to issue a bank-backed euro-denominated stablecoin. The license places Qivalis under the oversight of the Netherlands' financial authorities, a framework that governs firms issuing electronic money and providing related payment services. For a stablecoin issuer, this regulatory standing matters: it signals that the token's backing and operational practices fall within an established supervisory perimeter rather than operating in a gray area.

The development is notable because the euro stablecoin segment has been far less crowded than its dollar counterpart. A bank-backed euro token could offer an alternative for eurozone participants seeking on-chain settlement in their home currency, potentially reducing reliance on dollar-pegged instruments for European transactions. It may also serve as a test case for how licensed e-money issuers and traditional banks converge in digital asset infrastructure.

What to watch: details on reserve composition and custody, which institutions will support the token, and whether it gains listings on major exchanges or payment rails. Adoption, not approval, will ultimately determine its market relevance.
